What if you are extraordinary, powerful, brave, courageous and more? Wait a second, heaven forbid, what if you are a leader? Is it possible that you’ve been underselling yourself this whole time
What if you are extraordinary, powerful, brave, courageous and more? Wait a second, heaven forbid, what if you are a leader? Is it possible that you’ve been underselling yourself this whole time?
Chapter member, Tania Jones shared Drew Dudley’s TED Talk titled ‘Everyday Leadership’ with me this summer (see below).
The ‘lollypop story’ Drew shares in his talk really raises a question about the moments in our lives that have the biggest impact on others. Do we know when we have a significant impact on others? How do we know – really know – when we’ve made a difference?
What if that is all being ‘a leader’ is really about?
Leadership = have an impact, make a difference to someone else’s life
Gosh, that makes it simple doesn’t it?
I know many people reading this may be reluctant to label themselves as a leader. A first follower or people-person at best, but not a leader – that’s too intense. Why are we scared of the word ‘leader’? Why do we need the label at all? What if, instead of using ‘leader’ as a label to describe who you are, it was your passion, your interactions and your impact on this world that demonstrated you are a leader? Full stop.
I think this is an extraordinary way of describing leadership and, to draw on a quote that Drew references in the TED Talk, wonder if:
“Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, and not our darkness, that frightens us.” Marianne Williamson
So, who’s been a light in your life that created a lolly pop moment for you? Share below, or bring your thoughts along to our next chapter meeting.
